The Shiranian Family and Medallion GalleryThe path down the world of carpet weaving as an object d ’art has been descended in the Shiranian family since the turn of the 19th century. The Shiranians have been living in the Hamadan region of Iran for many generations. It was their great grandfather Hadj Hossein Jaliloff who started the carpet business as a tradition in the Shiranian family, which was the last name he chose once he move from the Russian regions to Hamadan in Iran. He was a prominent merchant who had traveled on multiple occasions to Europe, Russia and Asia by the way of Caravans to trade tea leaves and cotton for printed fabrics (cloth) and other goods. As a family tale has it, on one of his long trips, he was offered a substantial amount of money for his saddle bag that was made out of rugs, and this had become a turning point in his life. Subsequently after his return, he decided to start exporting Persian carpets instead of trading tea leaves. Within a few years, his booming business had expanded vastly and his rugs would go to Lebanon, England, and Germany and finally to France where he also met and became friends with a prominent Merchant family by the name of Chasseau, with whom he eventually partnered in the following years.
The Shiranian Rug Company ca. 1910 in Hamadan - Iran, with a shipment ready for New York City /Brooklyn, USA By the year 1905,Hadj Hossein’s 17 year old son who would later be known as Hadj Mohammad , stayed with the Chaseau family for one year to learn the French language and culture. It was during this formative year that he befriended young William Chasseau who had a genuine and intrinsic passion for nature and colors. To everybody’s surprise, soon they paired their knowledge and expertise, and mutually decided to design their own very first rug. By 1930, 32 year old Haj Mohammad and Mr.Chaseau had the largest workshop in Iran’s Hamadan region, employing 350 master weavers. Now they were exporting their carpets as far as Europe and the United States. In the early 1940’s Haj Mohammad ’s eldest son Ahmad followed the family tradition and at the young age of 16 joined his father’s business. Ahmad was travelling to the southern parts of Iran (Ahvaz and Ababdan) to buy old and antique rugs and which he would sell to international merchants. By the age of 25 Ahmad had grown his business immensely to have over 1200 master weavers working at various workshops in Hamadan. He had also set up an additional 150 workshops in the Southern province of Shiraz. Though he had such a profound interest in the carpet business, Ahmad had banned his only son Amir to attend his business activities. He was emphasizing on Amir’s education and that became the motive for him to send Amir to Paris at age 16. One more time the Shiranian family tightened their connection to France. After earning my high school diploma, I followed my dream of moving to the United States. I moved to Boston and was able to complete my education, while majoring in corporate Finance and minoring in eastern Anthropology. My vision and thrive to utilize my education into the principles of family business lead me to pursue a life time goal to give a new breath to the family business. During my last year in college, I ended my final thesis by reading to the crowd of graduates:“Eat more than you can chew, then chew it. Plan for more than you can do then do it. Hitch your wagon to a star, keep your seat and there you are…..” Today I have gathered 20 years of self acquired experience in the rug industry, and while being innovative, my team is serving designers nationally and internationally from our business headquarters on Newbury Street in Boston.
